Enrico Crivellaro (Neroli / Archive)

What was that got you into music in the first place?
I guess checking my parents records at home and slowly buying the first ones myself to play on the home stereo.
Why did you decide to make a living out of music?
I actually didnt as I have my daily job too. I always considered music as a passion and eventually did it semi - professionally!
What kinds of music do you think influenced you?
Back in the days all old chicago [mr fingers, lil louis, armando, steve pointdexter, vincent floyd] and new york [Burrell brothers, Bobby Konders, Blaze, new jersey stuff] house music, and then eventually detroit techno [carl craig's Retroactive, Transmat, UR]. then i embraced other stuff like soul, brazilian, fusion and I started broadening a bit my horizons....and I'm still digging!!!
What inspired you to start Music label?
Well, I always wanted to get busy with music...I always collected records and djed either in clubs or in my bedroom....I got offered the opportunity to go once in the studio to make some tracks and from there I learned more about the whole music business world. so from helping A&Ring for Sonica [a drum n bass label in mid 90s] I ended up doing more label managing...
How were Neroli and Archive established? also What are differences between Neroli and Archive?
Archive was founded in 97 for DiPiù, the publishing company I was already working with doing A&R at Sonica with Frank Siccardi. as I was more interested in detroit techno, house and the new stuff coming from west London I decided to start this label as a platform for music I was feeling more deeply. Neroli is my very own label and production company and was established in 2000 as a space to increase my freedom of movements and also to release more tracky and dancefloor material. Archive in general is slightly more abstract and also more focused on artist albums, while Neroli is more about singles and other projects [merchandise, etc].
What is the most interesting thing about being in the music label business?
Well, I guess the great thing is to break new artists or collaborate with likeminded people. also if you make your own music, you can have total control and freedom. I definetly miss that when I work for other labels. also i like to work with designers as i enjoy label artwork a lot!

What is a biggest difference from indipendent label and major music label?
Well, i never worked with a major or in a major so I cannot be sure....I guess the freedom is the main thing missing working with a major....then again some indipendent give don't give freedom to artists either...
Do you have any standards when selecting songs to be released?
First, I have to feel they'll be interesting in years to come. then they have to sound soulful to my ears and with a good sound too [technically speaking].
What was the most difficult thing for you when launching a new record label?
I guess visibility and budget.....now is very tough!
What is the most interesting thing about being in the music label business?
For me, being more creative than in my 9 to 5 job.
What is the most difficult thing about being in the music label business?
Today's market....people taking music as something for free...I still dont like all this digital thing, even cdrs....I like the dear old vinyl
What do you think is the most important thing about being in the music label business?
I think what is important is to be personal and consistant.
How do you think club music is going to evolve?
I've got no idea, but I'm worried is going in a direction that I dont like....actually seing whats around now I'm pretty sure about that!
How is Italy as an evironment for Music?
Well, apart few likeminded people in Verona and Bologna, and few clubs like Garage Paradise, Boca Barranca and Mercati Generali there's not much going on for the music we support. but within these small realities we created a strong link and a sense of appartenece. also there are some good djs here: Luca Trevisi, Paolo Ledisque, Massimo Napoli, Gino Grasso, Nox....from a producer point of view I find being isolated kinda interesting, as I have my own angle to judge things.
Could you tell a bit about next plan of your Labels?
Archive has new 12"s out now from AS ONE [with a Los Hermanos rmx] and Alex Phountzi. also we'll have Phil Asher next album on the label too.

Neroli will release Domu "Discotech II" ep, a new Nutmeg 12" and a sampler ep with Domu, Volcov and Isoul8 [remixed by Kemetic Just].
Thank you
